A life changes
the world that
changes its life.

It was a fly. We begin with its brain and cord connectivity, and a fly-shaped physical world: articulated legs and antennae, moving eyes, a proboscis, wings and halteres. Around it, living surfaces consume finite material to branch through leaves, bark and stems. Bodies change their surroundings; those changes become the next sensation.

Two NeuroMechFly bodies. All 165,122 MaleCNS neurons per resident. Seven evolving neural fields, private efficacy and eligibility on 4,184 measured connections, 1,771 retinal sites and 807 body signals. Each body has 69 segments and 126 articulated axes; motor-neuron activity drives 84 joint servos, foot adhesion and oral physiology. Private memory sends context back through descending neurons. Visit with a tone, a film screen or a movable object. Antennae make reciprocal physical contact through their articulated segments.

The articulated body comes from micro-CT-derived NeuroMechFly morphology, paired explicitly with a different male CNS specimen. Effective servos and synthetic chemical dynamics complete the model; we have not recovered all of a fly’s physiology. The selected public model is initialized and untrained. The unified Rust/MuJoCo V5 run developed small endogenous synaptic changes and restored its complete state exactly, including a newly inserted object; the new trained V5 child preserved support in short physical trials and remains a research artifact. Training uses actual physical histories. The earlier V2 screen experiment changed neural activity, actions and body trajectories in its own simpler body. Follow the measured response ↗

Earlier ecological world · authenticated recording

Eight residents. An ecological baseline.

This fixed, read-only 360-frame episode preserves the completed ecological v8 world at model seconds 265.05–352.65. It records regional material transport, physical paths, growth, signals and private-memory summaries from eight residents. This older controller included direct sensory routes; the new CNS-only screen experiment is a separate research life. The viewer interpolates recorded poses for display and never advances the simulation.

Connected pillars · distinct recorded generations

Actions become matter, memory and another body's next sensation.

Movement changes what the eyes can encounter. Activity draws on finite reserves. Signals become another body’s sensation. The new live garden routes these inputs through the full CNS before private cognition. The current layered habitat connects 156 finite material regions through 190 routes. Native branching rules use local light and clearance to propose growth, and the physical engine determines whether a funded branch fits. Earlier recordings preserve their own mechanisms and histories.

01

A measured neural scaffold

MaleCNS v1.0 supplies 165,122 traced brain-and-cord neurons, 25,563,197 directed edges, and 124,025,046 measured synapses represented by those edges. Native recurrent dynamics run against that anatomy; the dynamics and interfaces are engineered.

02

Vision from the body

The moving fly eyes carry 1,771 bilateral retinal sites, with 1,486 supported by connectome anchors. Actual collision rays sample RGB; gaze, full body rotation and occlusion change the view. Anatomical column membership is measured; the angular eye layout is engineered.

03

Memory talks back to the CNS

The Rust organ stores experienced CNS states and delivered context sequences privately. Its twelve signed outputs enter 1,314 descending neurons. Physical commands are decoded from 815 annotated motor neurons after recurrence. Memory retains what happened after a context sequence was delivered, including interrupted attempts. Achieved CNS states can become later goals; its training status remains attached to each released life.

04

Learn the consequences

Shared sensory and motor interfaces learn from actual physical episodes. Native GAM fits the consequences of release and modulation settings, then sends its prediction back to the full graph for an actual run. An earlier proposed setting missed its accuracy target; that result is retained alongside the fit. GAM does not replace the CNS.

05

Matter moves through a built world

The fly habitat shares eight chemical pools across bodies, finite grains and moist patches, colonies, and 156 connected regions. Native branching spends stored material and becomes colliding geometry. Local light, clearance and inherited branching parameters change which constructions can occur. Adult flies are not spawned by the colony development mechanism.

06

Different constitutions, different niches

The native population experiments vary body and sensory parameters, phototrophic capacity, enzyme budgets and metabolic response laws. A cold offspring inherits those rules; its parent’s acclimated expression and memories stay with the parent. Population search keeps several strategies and records failed lives as well as completed ones.

The mechanism is current. The evidence keeps its date.

Recorded ecological growth. All 48 genotype–habitat worlds and four GAM-proposed confirmations completed 32 model seconds of material-funded construction. Compare inherited branching programs, scrub through actual committed structures, and inspect conditional GAM predictions in the new growth atlas ↗. These ecological runs used neutral body controls, without a CNS.

Current V5 private synapses. The full CNS, articulated bodies and private memory ran together for 128 physical ticks. Actual sensory history produced small efficacy changes on all 4,184 selected KC→MBON11 connections in each resident. Whole-life replay was exact, and the synaptic inspector did not alter state. This establishes the coupled mechanism, not learned walking or associative preference. Joined receipt ↗

Earlier V2 CNS response. With exactly matched initial worlds, a physical film screen changed 140,200 of 149,782 non-afferent neuron rows at some point during 30 model seconds, above a 10⁻⁶ difference threshold. Actions and trajectories also diverged. This is a graded synthetic model with an initialized controller, not measured fly firing or film understanding. Experiment and controls ↗

Earlier native physical integration. Eight articulated bodies shared 21 material regions, 29 routes and six outlets for 1,200 physical ticks. All six designated outlets activated finite packets; a complete packet exit conserved its contents and retired its physical body. Growth committed 12 times, and the coupled state restored exactly. This run used analyst-supplied actions. Executed receipt ↗

Reciprocal-wave recording. The embedded 360-frame episode is an authenticated research continuation from a coherent tick boundary, not a fresh birth. It exposes eight residents' recorded sensory and physical streams plus exact typed event receipts without exposing private memory content.

Two completed reciprocal waves. All 160 assigned research lives completed 2,048 ticks across ten environments: 327,680 resident transitions. The principal wave took 986 supervised seconds; the selected challenge wave took 969.03 seconds. They recorded five and sixteen mouth-contact ticks respectively. The cohorts differ, so this is not a measured improvement in feeding.

Connected evidence. The native Weave graph now contains 9,753 nodes and 28,802 edges, linking the earlier campaign, fitted mechanisms, explicit research branches and 9,081 recorded world events. Original failed histories remain preserved.

Archive and fits. After both waves, the population search holds 74 entries in 21 archive cells, informed by 160 completed life records. Fitted GAM models contribute bounded action scores and private corrections. Their predictive accuracy does not by itself establish a behavioral benefit. The inherited research controller is downloadable.

What remains open. This recording establishes that the joined mechanisms ran and records their physical consequences. A longer private continuation later paused after a material packet escaped the finite terrain; its checkpoint and diagnosis are preserved. It does not by itself demonstrate learned feeding, cross-feeding, sustained regulation, social competence, reproductive success or evolutionary improvement.

Earlier recordings. The preceding trained-organ episode, v4 founder region, and courtyard life remain pinned records of their own mechanisms and times.

Compact lab chronology

How the pieces arrived.

All evidence and limitations  ↗
  1. Compact FlyWire world

A 6,789-neuron female FlyWire v783 subset powered the earlier 2D engine and bootstrap behaviors. It remains an explicitly separate archived substrate.

  2. Growth became persistent terrain

Three supplied colony lineages built more than 1,600 physical parts in 180 model seconds. Material transfer, digestion, topology-sensitive transport and deterministic continuation were exercised in controlled runs.

  3. Brain, cord, body and chemistry joined

Full MaleCNS dynamics reached articulated residents with physical feeding, energy expenditure, private recurrent state and continuous action.

  4. The first campaign closed with mixed evidence

Sixteen evaluations completed, while two shared cohort-engine faults affected 64 other records. The archive and fitted response surfaces are inspectable; learned feeding, durable regulation and evolutionary improvement remain unproven.
