Dragon's Clutch · the lexicon, and the theorem under it
A clutch
of eggs.
Dragon's Clutch is a market protocol that compiles a bounded question about the world into conserved payoff assets. It has its own vocabulary, and the vocabulary is worth learning first · because the protocol's central promise is written in it.
The words.
Realm
An immutable collateral profile: one mint, one token program, frozen presets. The protocol never mixes collateral across Realms.
Hoard
The market-local vault. Reserved exclusively for claimants · Hoard principal cannot fund fees, rent, operations, or anyone's convenience.
Egg
One basis claim over the outcome space. Categorical at degree zero; a smooth spline weight at degrees one through three.
Clutch
One complete set: one unit of every Egg. A clutch can always be recombined into its collateral before resolution · split and merge are exact inverses.
Feed · Window
A shared authenticated observation series, and an immutable derived result over a frozen interval of it. Provider transport is not product truth.
Hatch
Resolution: an immutable, evidence-derived transition that assigns each Egg its exact integer weight and lets it redeem.
The promise.
Most venues manage risk with machinery pointed at you: margin calls, liquidation engines, insurance funds, socialized losses. Dragon's Clutch has none of those, because it never creates the debt they exist to chase. Its promise is narrower and stronger:
For every reachable protocol state, the market's Hoard covers the maximum payout allowed by its immutable terms.
no debt · no margin calls · no liquidations · no socialized loss
Solvency is an invariant, not an operations team: V ≥ maxp liability(p) · the vault holds enough for the worst payout the terms can produce, on every path. Splitting a clutch adds the same quantity to every Egg and to the Hoard; merging reverses it; trading changes no total liability at all.
Claims are curves.
Event markets today answer every question with a cliff. Five bands on a price means a knife edge at every boundary: one atom of movement across a line flips a full unit of payout. Adding bins multiplies the edges; it never makes a curve.
Clutch's basis is a partition of unity · B-splines on a frozen grid, degree zero through three. Degree zero is exactly today's bins. Degrees one through three are native curved claims: nearby Eggs overlap, stay nonnegative, and their weights sum exactly to one. "Pay me proportionally to how far it fell," a capped ramp, a smooth tail hedge · these become coefficient vectors over Eggs, not new vaults with new liabilities.
And curved claims change what a market can price. In one executable exhibit, two estimators · a Gaussian fit and an empirical resample of the same history · each stated its belief as a density over the same eight-Egg basis. The clearing relation settled their portfolios at an integer price vector that is, checkably, the moment vector of an explicit probability measure lying between the two beliefs. A market pricing disagreement between models, instead of only between moods.
Resolution is recomputation.
A resolution here is not "oracle says 123." It is a chain of artifacts · terms, authenticated source occurrences, a sealed window, the statistic, the exact payout vector · that anyone can recompute. The resolver submits a transaction; it does not adjudicate anything. In the current laboratory campaign, one market ran its whole life against real provider data on a local validator:
create → endow → split → trade → freeze → resolve → redeem → withdraw 52 signed transactions · listener-audited local validator wrong-config attempt: refused · SourceAdmissionFailed (0x7a) · atomic rollback wrong-feed attempt: refused · SourceAdmissionFailed (0x7a) · atomic rollback final accounting: all 128 collateral atoms accounted for
The refusals are the point. A protocol shows you what it is by what it declines to do, with which error, leaving which state behind.
And the kernel does not privilege one way of trading. Signed-intent Direct settlement is the ordinary path; General, a frequent-batch venue with exact simplex prices and atomic portfolios, exists for when it earns its complexity; Dealer attaches covered, quiescence-gated capital. Every venue must produce the same conservation and settlement receipts · venues compete, the theorem doesn't.
Built three times.
Dragon's Clutch is being deliberately rebuilt · the first build mined what could exist, the second learned what must be true, the third is making the semantics machine-checkable. That story is its own essay: Plan to compost at least three.
The protocol also has a second life, as evidence: it is the named witness behind six positions prepared for the CFTC · feasibility claims, a sentence at a time, with a checkable trail.
Status, plainly: a research protocol in laboratory environments. No deployment, no customers, no public market, no value at risk. The lifecycle above ran against captured provider fixtures on a local validator · which is exactly the point: checkable before live.
